In France, the coastal licence allows navigation up to 6 nautical miles from a shelter, while the offshore extension allows unlimited distance, day or night. The choice of boat and intended navigation area must therefore be consistent with the skipper's qualification.
For a charter with a professional skipper, it is the skipper who must hold the required qualifications (licence, STCW certificates depending on vessel size and distance travelled), not the client. Rules also differ from one Mediterranean country to another (Italy, Spain, Monaco), which can affect a multi-country itinerary.
